Bereits registrierte Second Life User können direkt unter university of innsbruckteilnehmen.

Avatar-Based Innovation and the Ideation Quest

A playground of ideas in Second Life

After two projects are almost half way through the game time, it’s about time to provide a general explanation of the project.

The Ideation Quest in Second Life explores how to effectively combine the emerging technology of virtual worlds with a customer-centric perspective of open innovation. In a playful process, participants are invited to either share their ideas on the future motor biking experience or to come up with creative input on the question of how sustainable living will look in the year 2020.

Along the process participants collect points on the three dimensions of creativity, collaboration and expertise on a number of creative tasks such as a brainstorming session or the submission of ideas. The innovators with the most points will be rewarded with prizes after the four weeks game time. In the unconstrained world of Second Life the participants’ creativity has no limits. The competition targets Second Life users that are interested in a creative task and those that bring in special knowledge on the underlying product category.

This Friday (June 27th) 12 pm SLT/9pm CET there will be a guided Tour through the KTM Ideation Quest and building support will be available to help visualize participants’ ideas. Later that day support will be available at 9 pm SLT for the Philips Design project.

Registered Second Life users can go directly to the KTM Ideation Quest (link) or to the Philips Design Ideation Quest (SLURL). Those new to Second Life my register for free at www.secondlife.com and then click on the above link or search for the Ideation Quest. For more information participants are invited to join the Second Life group “IDEATION QUEST” or contact Rein Spire in-world.

To enhance the experience of the Ideation Quest we are looking forward to receive feedback. This project is work in progress and an open dialogue could enrich the evolutionary progression of the Ideation Quest.

The Ideation Quest is a research project conducted by Thomas Kohler (University of Innbruck), Dr. Daniel Stieger (Avaty) (link) and Dr. Johann Füller (HYVE) in collaboration with the KTM Motorcycle AG and Philips Design.

KTM Ideation Quest - Kick-Off Event

Yesterday the KTM Ideation Quest started. Around 60 avatars came to test ride the new Stunt 690 and to get creative at the different tasks. All considered it was a successfull start and thanks to all that made this possible - especially Dirty McLean and Bikey Beckers. The traffic and contribution was not major but it was a good start, to get further experiences. We will continue to work on usability issues and hold the next event soon. The traffic distribution map (see below) shows that especially around the arrival platform and the inspiration building avatars were hanging out. Before the idea submission step users will probably need more time to collect their thought and come back later to express their ideas. Stay tuned for the next event or visit right away by clicking here.

Information on the KTM Ideation Quest

Introduction to the Ideation Quest
The KTM Ideation Quest is a research project conducted for the PhD thesis “Avatar-Based Innovation” at the University of Innsbruck in cooperation with Avaty and the support of the KTM Motorcycle AG.

What is the KTM Ideation Quest about?

The KTM Ideation Quest is all about creative ideas related to the motorbike experience of the future. Participants are invited to engage in creative tasks, submit their ideas and vote other ideas. Along the process participants collect points on the three dimensions of creativity, collaboration and expertise. The participants with the most points will be rewarded with prizes. The participants’ creativity has no limits!

Who can enter?
The competition targets motor sports interested avatars, as well as for those who are interested in a creative task.

How to participate
Participants have to wear the ideation meter, that tracks the score of each avatar. The different tasks are explained on the information boards. Ideas may be visualized as 3D Second Life objects, created by drawing programs or drawn freehand and could also be as a text description. It is possible for participants to submit any number of ideas.

What is in it for the participants? Who wins the Ideation Quest?

KTM sponsors a set of Power Ware clothing for the each of the five most successful avatars that collected the most points and submitted the best ideas during the event period. The ideas will be judged by user votes as well as by an expert jury. The game time starts at 30 May 2008 and will end at 5 July 2008.

First innovation playground in second life

Our IQuest innovation playground aims at developing an environment for open innovation projects in the second life platform. We suppose, that a three dimensional world facilitate the integration of customers in the product development process even more, than web does.

Various tools, like automatic questionnaires (evaluation tools), toolkits (design and built tools) or presentation facilities should be developed. These tools should be compatible and can interchange data. The crucial point is, that taken as a whole, they form a kind of innovation game. A playful and challenging game mechanism, together with an interesting story line, attracts participants and makes them focused on the innovation tasks.

Our View: IQuest - Objectives

  • Generating intense participation leading to innovative ideas both in terms of quality and quantity – keeping and engaging avatars on the island
  • Build an innovation community or establish critical mass to allow social interaction – make avatars return to the island (critical mass at least at scheduled times)
  • Develop a game which enriches accepted company presences and creates additionally value for visiting avatars.

Participants View: User Needs partaking in co-innovation processes expect

  • An autotelic / playful task
  • Are driven by curiosity - exploration - arousal seeking
  • Want to master a challenge and achieve something
  • Skill development, knowledge acquisition, Information seeking
  • Recognition – visibility (earn reputation)

Together with Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM we will open the first IQuest on the second life island University of Innsbruck. The opening event is planned for next week. Details will follow.

Snowsome

Schaut vorbeit!

Ballers City

Ballers City auf Blogs

Der renommierteste Blog zu Second Life berichtet über das Street Jam Projekt Ballers City:

“Ballers City is a plucky, homegrown basketball-themed community with streetsmart, hardtop flavor, and right now, it’s whipping the pants off the NBA’s official Second Life site, performing twice as well despite the NBA’s 25% rise in visitors this week….Seeing as how Ballers is beating out the most renowned corporate brand in professional basketball…”
